Chapter 22

Tansae’s POV

“Your father was a nice man once,” she starts, flipping the journal open. She scans the pages to relay every detail in the right order. Her eyes are empty as she digs into her mind, pulling forward a past that I’ve never known. I stare at her lips as she parts them for a moment only to shut them again, this action repeating a few times before words finally flow free. “But the truth is, Tansae, your father only knew how to get what he wanted because he convinced others they wanted the same thing. As a businessman, I can respect that, but it took me years to realize he used that skill to manipulate me. I was his trophy, a doll that wasn’t allowed to speak. He convinced me he wanted children when he only wanted an heir to the fortune he was building. I watched him use me to create the world he wanted, only to leave me with nothing. Nothing…but you,” she says.

“So what?” I ask.

She sighs, her hands folding together in her lap, “Honey, you may see him as a rich man who never let anything stand in his way, but that’s not the role he promised us. He was hollow. He used us both.”

“He invested in me,” I respond. She huffs and I begrudgingly make a decision to keep my mouth shut. “Continue.”

She takes a deep breath and smoothes her hair down, gathering it over one shoulder, “I married your father because he said he wanted to give me the world. I do believe there was a time when he loved me, but it was short-lived. I found myself standing further and further behind him with each public appearance. He shut me out more, making each idea I had sound more idiotic than the next. I was nothing more than a factor in his equation for success.”

She flips through the journal until she lands on my section, a sorrowful smile etching into her features. “I wanted children and he was thrilled to start a family, so I held onto hope that he still cared for me. He was supportive through the pregnancy, and for the first time in years, I felt like his wife again. I thought I finally had him back, but once you were born it all stopped. You were too young to remember how little he was around, but you…you were so amazing. Caring, loving, talented, and intelligent beyond words. You brought a light back into my life that I had lost long ago. I stayed for you, and only you. Your father had proven he didn’t care about me the way he promised, but I could still give my love to you.”

She flips a bit further, her smile fading into a blank expression, “I had seven years with you before he decided my time was up and he ripped you from me. At first, I thought nothing of it. He told me he wanted to teach you about the mines and the company, that it was a wonderful educational opportunity.
